| There is one populated place name beginning with X - Xena in Saskatchewan. There are five former Indian Reserves in British Columbia whose names begin with X - X'uji, Xlukwskw, X'anmas, and Xmaat'in, and Xts'init. There are eleven geographical features whose names begin with X. Then there are several geographical features which come up in a search of names beginning with X, but are sorted under the X, such as Lac X in Quebec. (As there are a lot of features beginning with Lac, it's easier to search on the first letter of the second word in the name.) There are also some features that begin with a character that looks like an upper case X with a line below it. This character is not yet represented on keyboards so we ( Natural Resources Canada) have compiled a list of similar characters. For now in our system, you can query it as an X, but you will find that the response shows {3} instead of the upper case X with a line below it. You can do queries on names beginning with X on the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base at: <http://geonames.nrcan.gc.ca/search/search_e.php>. However, you must have at least two characters entered before you can use the wildcard (an asterisk *). Or you must have at least two characters entered and leave the checkmark in the box below where you have entered the two letters. Text to the right of the box says "Do you want all "wildcard" combinations?". |
