Birth date & Place: Jan. 11, 1815 Glasgow, Scotland. Came to Canada at the age of 5.  Married twice with a total of 3 children, one of whom, Hugh John, was an MP -1891-1893.

• Two sons, one died in infancy
• Remarried 1867, Susan Agnes Bernard (1836-1920)
• One daughter

Death: at age 76,June 6, 1891, of heart failure. Buried in Cataraqui Cemetery, Kingston, Ontario   See: Grave sites of the Prime Ministers and Find a Grave.

First PM in Confederation. First PM of Canada to die in office. One of the Fathers of Confederation.
